UK Search & Rescue

Search and Rescue teams might appear to be fairly low profile organisations to those that don't live near sea, caves or mountains but even metropolises like London, Luton or Manchester have dedicated search and rescue operations as well as major UK counties.

Lowland search and rescue is the official term for such bodies and if you thought these were made up from bands of people forming willy-nilly unofficial groups eagerly awaiting an unfortunate event in order that they can be called to action, you couldn't be further wrong.

What makes a Search and Rescue organisation 'official'?

We automatically think of the 'Emergency Services' as Police, Fire & Ambulance followed by the RNLI and Mountain Rescue. There is also Lowland Search and Rescue and Cave rescue. It is unfair to put any of these in a pecking order because each has its own priority depending on the circumstances.

It starts at the top with the UK Government's Department for Transport's department UKSAR that provides a comprehensive search and rescue service for those reported in trouble either on land, on water or in the air and for those reported missing. The fully integrated organisation of search and rescue co-ordinators and operational units uses a comprehensive communications infrastructure providing a well-developed search and rescue system.
